He was always a money-earning machine to me in my childhood's memories. I never know what he thought, what he did, what he expected. Thanks to the house decoration this time, I finally got a chance to live with him, talking heart to heart and lying head to head. I was surprised to know that my father ever survived from several fatal accidents when he was mining coals deep under the earth. I was surprised to know that my father ever played harmonica very good. I was surprised to know that my father walked to school 30km away from his home when he was a child. Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states. We are, and always will be, the United States of America. It’s the answer that led those who’ve been told for so long by so many to be cynical and fearful and doubtful about what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day. It’s been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this date in this election at this defining moment change has come to America. A little bit earlier this evening, I received an extraordinarily gracious call from Sen. McCain. Sen. McCain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he’s fought even longer and harder for the country that he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine. We are better off for the service rendered by this brave and selfless leader. I congratulate him; I congratulate Gov. Palin for all that they’ve achieved. And I look forward to working with them to renew this nation’s promise in the months ahead. I want to thank my partner in this journey, a man who campaigned from his heart, and spoke for the men and women he grew up with on the streets of Scranton and rode with on the train home to Delaware, the vice president-elect of the United States, Joe Biden. And I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last 16 years the rock of our family, the love of my life, the nation’s next first lady Michelle Obama. Sasha and Malia I love you both more than you can imagine. And you have earned the new puppy that’s coming with us to the new White House. And while she’s no longer with us, I know my grandmother’s watching, along with the family that made me who I am. I miss them tonight. I know that my debt to them is beyond measure. To my sister Maya, my sister Alma, all my other brothers and sisters, thank you so much for all the support that you’ve given me. I am grateful to them. And to my campaign manager, David Plouffe, the unsung hero of this campaign, who built the best — the best political campaign, I think, in the history of the United States of America. To my chief strategist David Axelrod who’s been a partner with me every step of the way.To the best campaign team ever assembled in the history of politics you made this happen, and I am forever grateful for what you’ve sacrificed to get it done. But above all, I will never forget who this victory truly belongs to. It belongs to you. It belongs to you. I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn’t start with much money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington. It began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston. It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give $5 and $10 and $20 to the cause. It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generation’s apathy who left their homes and their families for jobs that offered little pay and less sleep. It drew strength from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on doors of perfect strangers, and from the millions of Americans who volunteered and organized and proved that more than two centuries later a government of the people, by the people, and for the people has not perished from the Earth. This is your victory. And I know you didn’t do this just to win an election. And I know you didn’t do it for me.You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead. For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime — two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century. Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us.There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after the children fall asleep and wonder how they’ll make the mortgage or pay their doctors’ bills or save enough for their child’s college education. There’s new energy to harness, new jobs to be created, new schools to build, and threats to meet, alliances to repair. The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even in one term. But, America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you, we as a people will get there. There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won’t agree with every decision or policy I make as president. And we know the government can’t solve every problem. But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And, above all, I will ask you to join in the work of remaking this nation, the only way it’s been done in America for 221 years — block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand. What began 21 months ago in the depths of winter cannot end on this autumn night. This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were. It can’t happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice. So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other. Let us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it’s that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers. In this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people. Let’s resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long. Let’s remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House, a party founded on the values of self-reliance and individual liberty and national unity. Those are values that we all share. And while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress. As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, we are not enemies but friends. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn, I may not have won your vote tonight, but I hear your voices. I need your help. And I will be your president, too. And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces, to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of the world, our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand. To those — to those who would tear the world down: We will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security: We support you. And to all those who have wondered if America’s beacon still burns as bright: Tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity and unyielding hope. That’s the true genius of America: that America can change. Our union can be perfected. What we’ve already achieved gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow. This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for generations. But one that’s on my mind tonight’s about a woman who cast her ballot in Atlanta. She’s a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing: Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old. She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn’t vote for two reasons — because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin. And tonight, I think about all that she’s seen throughout her century in America — the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times we were told that we can’t, and the people who pressed on with that American creed: Yes we can. At a time when women’s voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we can. When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs, a new sense of common purpose. Yes we can. When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. Yes we can. She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a bridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that “We Shall Overcome.” Yes we can. A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was connected by our own science and imagination. And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change. Yes we can. America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much more to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves — if our children should live to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have made? This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment. This is our time, to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth, that, out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope. And where we are met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can’t, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can. Thank you. God bless you. And may God bless the United States of America. 10/22/2008 To date or not to date? That is the question. To my surprise, my father got for me a blind date invitation when he went to buy tiles. The counter obasan happened to have a friend visiting her at the site and that friend happened to have a friend's daughter who is still single at the age of 29. Oh, my self-assertive father! I'm not sure if I'm ready for a blind date. I still have dreams and don't want to resign myself to the reality. And I don't have money in my pocket, all poured into my little new house. However, I do feel great solitude since I divorced about two years ago. And my life circle is too small to come into a romance. What should I do? 10/6/2008 Rich = Romantic ? You can deny but it's trueThough many people would say money doesn't mean anything to love, it's just a vulnerable lie when facing the truth. Without money, you can't afford a 999-rose bunch. Without money, you can't afford a trip to Shangri-la. Without money, you can't afford a dinner at Jinmao 88, not to say those violinists. 9/5/2008 When will the lonely way end? Haven't updated this blog for a long long long time. It's been more than a year that I've been alone. And this situation seems to continue without ends. Residence to company, company to residence, that's my life. No romance will happen in real life, especially in such an otaku-like life. Maybe, finally I would have to go blind dating. Just got the key to the new house I bought at Baoshan. A little excited, but much more is worried. A two-month house decoration is waiting for me. It's impossible for me to handle this heavy task all by myself. So I asked my old fellow for help. 66 years old though, my father comes to me as quickly as possible. Looking at his gray hair with silver tufts, I suddenly felt a great depression inside. Sorry, my father. I'm such an incompetent son! 4/27/2007 Nothing Lasts Forever《Nothing Lasts Forever》, a good novel by sidney shelton. but today I'm not talking about this book.
People say LOVE is an unsteady chemical, now I believe it. I ever thought divorce happens among unhappy couples. I was wrong. Sometimes love just fades away without any reason. A Wedding Boom YearThere's a popular rumor saying that this year has two springs and it will bring more lucks to marrying couples. And the first one who senses the money flaor is the wedding planning industry. After making several phone calls to some wedding planners I found the price is much higher than 1994, about twice as much as before. Surpising! So weds-to-be this year are surely to be suffered with a big bite of these hungry "tigers". 2/10/2006 My lasy brother-in-lawMy brother-in-law is really a slow guy. His wedding is only one month ahead and he is still lazy at finding a wedding planner. Just can't believe he is a groom-to-be. Again my wife and me have to take over the responsibility an go over all the wedding events once more. Sigh..., just proves one saying, "able men are always busy". 1/10/2006 Translation Practise (5)(Original)

LIFE TEMPLATE
In the later half of 20th century, two scientists, Feynman and Drechsler, launched the beginning of nanotechnology. As they said, since ancient times people have kept making stuff by means of "breaking-down", i.e., the means of cutting, splitting and composing. However, isn't it possible to produce by means of "self-organization"? It is conceivable that making self-duplicating nanometer robots could make it possible to decompound atoms of dust and build them into a soap or a piece of napkin. In doing so the threshold between life and non-life or making and growing is blurred and overlapped.
It is surely a nice concept if without the regrettable momentous flaw --- how to get the required program order that guides those nanometer robots when self-duplicating and building atomic piles into soap and napkin? There is no doubt that this order still comes from the top hence the information bottleneck between macro world and nanometer world. It's not impossible to bypass the bottleneck but the solution would make nanometer robots far more complicated and the piling from bottom to top too complicated to proceed.
Isn't there any real simple self-organizing method? The answer is Yes --- Life is a good example in the nature. Even the simplest life such as AIDS virus, colibacillus, eelworms and mosquitoes has a far more complicated structure than machine like automobile or TV does. However, such complex creature comes into being from bottom to top by the hidden instruction in DNA, which seems to be an efficient and economical process. Just think about how much effort and money we would have to pay for manufacturing a mini-helicopter functioning the same as a mosquito! On the contrary, the requirement of a mosquito's grownup is simply a nit and dirty water.
Owing to its extreme complexity and sophistication, the living creature is often mystified by people as the fine work of God and its formation is considered as a black box that man can never uncover. However, that can't be true in reality. Just cut it open with a reductive knife and you will find it's nothing more than a self-organization process. Everything in the universe is the creation of self-organization: quark from Big Bang, stars from nebula, geosphere of the earth, gypsum and salt, six-sided snowflakes, so on and so forth. The four fundamental forces in the universe, including Nuclear forces, Weak forces, Electromagnetic forces, and Gravitational forces, are the all-purpose glue that provokes the self-construction of complicated structures.
Life is also a kind of self-organization which is only a bit more sophisticated. The difference is: the self-organization progress of non-life materials doesn't need a template, or you can say there is a template, but it's very simple and can be found everywhere in the universe. So the sun can share the same growing path as another star 10 billion light-year away; the snowflakes on the planets of Barnard galaxy would also be a hexagon not a pentagon, if any. While the complicated template that life needs for self-organization could only be a result of god-given chances and evolution of millions and billions of years. Nevertheless, the formation of life is still essentially a physical process which is built through transmutation, expansion and curling of radicals that are bricked automatically with atoms by chemical bonds (electromagnetic forces actually).
Imagine making a micro-helicopter? What an easy job it wound be if we just found a template similar to the one of mosquitoes (blood-sucking function disabled of course) and activate it to grow!
However, critical weaknesses also exist in the protein-based beings: they are vulnerable and unable to bear high heat or coldness or radiation; their life is short and not strong enough; so on and so forth. Well then, how about making a nano-machine or even nano-life pursuant to formation theory of life-beings from metal atoms like silicon, tin, sodium, iron, aluminum, or mercury?
I think I have made a simplest template for silicon-tin-sodium beings as a result of my 30 years of study. 1/5/2006 I was locked out by myselfSuch a gloomy day it was! I just can't believe I would be so stupid to leave the key on the door inside when I went out for work. Even my wife has an alternate key but failed to open the damn door. Just because my stupid key is in the way! I'm totally a loser! Now I have to pay 100 or more to enter into my own house. Making mistakes is never toll-free, sigh...................................... 9/19/2005 Nothing Lasts Forever but Friendship Maybe an ExceptionAgain I was moved by one novel by Ms Yi Shu. This time it's "As Time Goes On" (流金岁月). The novel told us a story of faith and friendship between two girls who kept looking after each other for nothing return and no matter how differently they were living. A deep, heart-to-heart, knowing when to help and when to leave the other alone, and no-money-polluted friendship, what a fantastic dream for me! 9/15/2005 Can this really keep me "fresh"?Geez! Just don't understand why Hu launch this "game"! Does he really believe this "Keeping Fresh" movement will serve as a healing pill? Now I'm having to write a non-sense party-spirit analysis report and I hope Max is not laughing at this! Everybody knows it's high time to crack on the corruption. But please, don't be so naive, ok, Mr Hu? Translation Practice (4)(Original)
(Translation)
I nodded with a mixed feeling of passion and sadness. I had pursued the answer earnestly for this meaningless question during my childhood and never got results. Even now, when closing my eyes, I could still see something like eyewinkers which did exist but beyond my eyeshot forever. Perhaps it is only the reflection on the retina of micro-structure of pupil? Or it's the projection of another world (microcosmos)? Anyway I had lost interest in this question now. What sense could it make? But it did ever occupy my mind for a long time during my childhood.
I hadn't expected anyone who would have remembered such a minor thing. This fact even scared me in some sense: How many eyes were observing you quietly in your whole life! Mr He stared me into the eyes and said with a smile, "It seems that you have recalled it. According to Ms Sha, from then on she had thought of you as a born intelligent boy having predestined relationship with science."
I guessed that Aunt Sha's legacy was probably related to scientific research. Perhaps she had some unfinished important study waiting for me to take over. I was moved very much but had to smile regretfully. When I was a teenager I did have a strong desire of exploration. It fascinated me whether the magnetization of magnet to iron or the auto-orientation of sunflower towards the sun. I ever dreamed of being a scientist knowing every secret of universe but ended as a businessman. The destiny is not at the full control of your own after all.
"I'm grateful to Aunt Sha's praise. However, I'm only a businessman, making quite a profit and haven't undertaken any college education. even if I ever really had intelligent roots, they have been already withered."
"It doesn't matter, she trusted you very much. She said, 'as long as you wish, you can become buddha any time.'" he emphasized, "Once back, buddha immediately' is Ms Sha's original words."
Such trust made me moved while a bit laughing too. It seems this Aunt Sha was determined to bother me! I bet she would say "the sea of bitterness has no bounds, repent and the shore is at hand" if having time. In case the Inheritance means giving up the successful commercial career, I'm afraid I had to disappoint Aunt Sha. But I still waited courteously for the guest's following words. Mr He, the sophiscated lawyer, pierced my mind obviously and smiled.
"As I said before it's the most difficult job for me in my lawyer's life. Whether you accept this legacy or not, please don't decide in haste until you consider thoroughly. Remember, you can refuse." Said he in apology, "sorry, I can't disclose the content of the testament yet now. According to my party's request, please read this research notebook first. If you are not interested in it, further talk is surely unnecessary. Please do spare some time for a detailed reading and this is the legator's request."
He took out a thin copy of notebook from his black suitcase, passed it to me seriously and then took leave with a smile.
This aged cunning lawyer succeeded in evoking my curiosity. I arranged the work of this day hurriedly and took the notebook home as soon as possible. Nobody in the family. I came into the study, shut the door, and drew out the notebook to have a good Look at it. The worn black cover proved it an old stuff of several ten years ago. What secret on earth was hidden in this notebook which now lying in my hands silently like an old man good at keeping secret?
I opened it solemnly. No, there was no secret within, only to find some memos, reading notes and records of some experiments. Although it was a bit difficult to understand them due to the terse wording, I kept on looking through the notebook. At the end I found a brief writing with no more than 1,000 words which was going to change my whole life. (Translation) Mr. He came to my company on time the second day. I told my secretary to close the door and keep us not disturbed. Mr. He put on the lap his black suitcase from which, I thought, a copy of will testament would be taken out soon. But instead of doing that, he sighed, "Mr. Chen, I'm afraid it's the most difficult business I ever had in my lawyer life. Later you will understand why I say so. Now, let's first talk about the reason why my client would have appointed you as her inheritor." He continued, "Do you remember one thing happened at the age of two? When you could just say some monosyllabic words. One day your parents walked you outside for a rest accompanied by Ms Sha. Alongside your road there was a restaurant butchering an ox whose blood was all over and teardrops hung under its eyes. Your parents just walked straight through without expecting that you would put this in the heart. Back to home you kept being sorrowful and murmuring: knife, killing, knife, killing. Your mother suddenly understood and asked you, 'you are saying those people killed the ox with knife and the ox was very pitiful, right?' You broke into tears right after that and cried for so long time nobody could stop you. After that, Ms Sha began to pay much attention to you and thought of you as a man of benevolence." I tried my best to search it in my childhood memories but nothing found. I shook my head ashamed. Mr. He proceeded with his talk, "Another thing happened when you were 7 years old. Ms Sha said you were over-matured than other children at your age. You were often thinking about something frowned or asked some odd questions to the adults. You asked your Aunt Sha one day why there were numerous particles, lights or something else floating to and fro in front of your eyes even when eyelids were closed. And you often closed eyes trying to see them clearly but failed in vain because they would slip out of the vision slowly when you tried to aim the eyeballs at them. You asked Aunt Sha, what were those things? Was there another invisible world behind the world we could see? " 7/19/2005 Happy GatheringYesterday's gathering with my schoolmates was very exciting. It's already years since I met some of them last time. Some became moms, some got married, and some were just back from abroad. Many of them are managers of this or that kind. Time is really a cruel thing! 7/4/2005 38 Degrees and RisingThe electric bill of this month is going to be a huge surprise to me, I'm sure. The sweltering climate often puts me into doubt if I'm living in the Mars, instead of my beloved blue and white Earth. And even the water melon vendors know it's very time to loot the burning house. Sometimes I would imagine how could our ancient ancestors get through their dog days with so many clothes on? 6/21/2005 What a lazy guy I am!It's so long time that my blog has been waiting for me for a new word. Just don't feel the need to write anything. When i'm happy, I don't wanna bother writing; when i'm dismal, I don't have the passion to write. So sorry, my blog, you are doomed to be lonely, ha! However, don't worry, I will meet you now and then, just like today. I feel so afraid recently, for I have not a bit mood for working! I'm so sluggish I put off my assigned task for two weeks and still don't want to give it a touch! Oh my, I told myself that was wrong and I must pull togther, but no use. What can I do? Working for money is really a frustrating thing! Anybody tell me how to get through this haunting mental laziness? 4/21/2005 Thoughts after reading Yishu's Lian HuanLian Huan(连环) is the second novel by Yishu(亦舒) I ever read. It's so easy to sense the light sadness and nothing-can-help loneliness. I was totally indulged in the disconsolate mood even to doubt if there's real mutual love or not. Maybe LOVE is just one's own business, having nothing to do with others, whther you are loving or being loved. Why it's so hard to find a couple who love each other to the same extent, no more no less? There's one sentence in the novel making me deeply touched, "There's no reasoning in the relationship between boy and girl, and even no justice. It only matters if you are willing or not." I have no more to say. It's all there, sharp and clear. 4/15/2005 Imagine what? Benz makes bikes!Maybe it's not news to you, but really is to me. Mercedes-Benz makes auto-bikes! Very stylish and in fashion! Let's have a look!
Whoops! "Ashes of Time" is used by many guys!So I have to change my title, though it's one of my favorite movies. Everybody wants to be unique, right? Just thought of another famous movie I ever heard but never had a chance to see, "My Left Foot". OK, since I'm a left-handed boy, let's title my blog "My Left Hand". 4/14/2005 Crazy People, Crazy ParksonYesterday I accompanied my wife to Parkson for its anniversary discount shopping. It's really an amazing experience for me. Attracted by Parkson's "Pay 100 Only for Each 188 Bill" sales promotion, tens of thousands of women, whether young or middle-aged, whether students or office ladies, all flooded into this shopping mall and went all out to spend money as if it were just a pile of waste paper. Every floor was stuffed, each cashier was long queued, and all salesgirls were surrounded by bags waiting for payment. I joked to my wife, "It's really a gala of beauty and beast." 4/12/2005 It's right to protest against Japan, but could you use right English? As is known to all, Japan is plunging into the militaristic mud aggressively. Now the New History Textbook issue puts Chinese people into fire of anger. But unfortunately some patriotic youth can't express themselves well in English. Their slogan reads "To boycut any Japanese productions". Oh my, do you really want to make foreigners understood? here is my revision: Say NO to Japan! Let's boycott any products from It! |
